The FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) is an independent federal agency which protects owners of bank account against losses if the bank or savings and loan fails. The amount of “insurance” that the FDIC provides has recently increased to $250,000 for each owner of the account, designed to quiet the financial markets.
